-start talking about sex openly when they are 6 and 7 years old.
-they start having sex when they are 11-13, about 3-4 years prior to when the trobriand girls get their menstration cycle.
-the girls usually marry around 11-13 years old but it is accepted throughout the culture to have sex before then because sex has nothing to do with impregnation.
-boys are between the ages of 18-25 when they get married to the girls and virtually, the only reason they even marry is because they want the girls family's yam supply. the more yams you have, the more wealth and value. the girls have no reason for marrying.
-yams, family dinners, and gathering are more intimate than sexual acts.
-they don't believe sex has anything to do with contraception, meaning fathers arent biological. (babies are simply conceived from a spirit of the dead that comes through the mother when the time is right.)
-they dont believe in incest but have a very different view of what incest is, they believe that incest does not encompass a father having sex with the mothers children(actually the father and mothers children) because to them, fathers arent related to their 'inherited' (actually biological) sons and daughters until the father has sex with the kids. (having sex together means you now have a father)
- after the father then has sex with the children and they are now his, he pierces them and gives them jewelry. if you were to go to the trobriand islands and note that a child wasnt wearing jewelry, it simply means they haven't had sex with their father.
i studied this today for my anthropology class.
